Thief to keep son's words to hand
Wednesday September 24, 2008 USA
A US judge has ordered a man to have his six-year-old son's advice - "Daddy, stop stealing" - written on his hand for seven months.
As he was about to be sentenced for theft, Daniel Cleland, 27, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, told the judge what his son had told him.
County Circuit Judge Pamela Lightvoet ordered that he have the words written or taped on his arm or hand for the next seven months, reports the Kalamazoo Gazette.
The sentence was instead of the seven month jail sentence the judge was considering before Cleland told her how he was trying to beat heroin addiction for the sake of his children.
Judge Lightvoet told Cleland that this was his last chance to avoid time behind bars.
"You very easily could have been sent off to jail for seven months," she said. "I don't want to see you back here unless you're visiting."
The judge also sentenced Cleland to four years probation.
